I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself, Ms. Jo-Anne Durham. I am a Deaf consultant, American Sign Language (ASL) teacher and proprietor of "Leading Hands of Canada", a professional service specializing in building better communication between the Deaf and Hearing communities.

I would like to inform that there are important changes coming to Ontario Human Rights Act. In 2005, the Ontario Government instituted the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disablilities Act (AODA) moving towards full inclusion of persons with disabilities giving them more access and responsiveness to their needs. The goal is to make Ontario barrier free by 2025.

The Accessibility Standards for Customer Service, Ontario Regulation 429/07 came into effect on January 1, 2008. It is the first accessibility standard that was created under the authority of the AODA and is a significant step toward achieving the goal of a barrier free Ontario.

What Leading Hands of Canada can do for you!

• With the growing public expectations of equality and independence for persons with disabilities, the mandate of Leading Hands of Canada is to provide a professional cost-effective service that will help YOU to meet the communication accessibility needs of the Deaf.

Leading Hands of Canada can educate and train employers and employees from organizations and businesses, both private and public, on how to communicate using American Sign Language (ASL) with your Deaf clients and customers and/or employees.

Leading Hands of Canada provides a Deaf professional instructor with over 25 years experience in the teaching of American Sign Language (ASL) to the general public, professionals, service providers, employers and employees..

Leading Hands of Canada has optional services with seminars, ASL courses, private tutoring, customized workshops and presentations.

How do you benefit?

• Who will benefit from learning American Sign Language (ASL)? Fire Departments, Police Departments, Medical Professionals, Emergency Services, Dentists, Optometrists, Lawyers, Social Service Providers, Judicial Administration, Local Customer Service Businesses, and the list can go on and on....

• When your staff learns ASL, they will feel more comfortable to speak with and communicate with their Deaf clients.

• Making your business/service accessible by removing the communication barrier will increase your client base to include the Deaf people. It will also provide more employment opportunities as the Deaf community is able to use their skills to join the work force at your workplace where there will be barrier free communication.

A Barrier-Free Ontario is Possible!

We look forward to meeting your Accessibility Needs.

Thank you;

Ms. Jo-Anne Durham
